for nursing in the university of your choice in Nigeria where you want to study nursing. Before we go into the crux of this post fully, there is also a common mix up between studying Nursing in the university and studying Nursing at a school of Nursing or school of midwifery. If you are a little confused about the difference between the two, I’ll clarify for you. There is a difference between studying Nursing in a university and attending a school of nursing. Simply put, a Degree Nursing is offered in the university while Registered Nursing (RN) is offered in the school of nursing or college of nursing under the hospital management. Also, while a Degree in Nursing is run for 5 years, Registered Nursing is run for 3 years in a school of nursing or school of midwifery. What this means is that if you want to study nursing in the university for Degree Nursing (BSN), you will need to sit for JAMB examination and score the required cutoff mark of the university of your choice. Each university has its own stipulated cut off mark for various courses of study apart from the general JAMB cutoff score. Since this post is to help you understand the JAMNB cutoff mark for nursing in 2020/2021, I will restrict my explanation to JAMB and leave the requirement for gaining admission into a school of nursing for a subsequent post. But notice, you don't need to write JAMB to enter a school of nursing. Schools of nursing usually set their different exams for their candidates which is not JAMB. The reason for this is that nursing is a very competitive course in the faculty of medical sciences. Also, not all universities in Nigeria offer degree nursing because nursing is a professional course of study. Only a few schools have been accredited to offer a degree in nursing. Once you score at least 250 in your JAMB UTME, then you can be considered. This does not mean you may not be considered if you score less than 250, it all depends on your school of choice. Usually, once JAMB has released its official minimum cutoff for all universities in Nigeria, each university will then set their cutoff marks for different courses of study. If you want to increase your chances of gaining admission into the university to study nursing, you have to meet the cut-off of the school. Let's say you are looking to study nursing at the University of Lagos. Let’s assume Unilag cutoff for nursing in 2020/2021 is 260. If you then score 275, you have greatly increased your chances of gaining admission into Unilag to study nursing. If you meet the school’s cutoff, you will then qualify to write their post-UTME. After the screening test, the school will release the result of the test. This screening test score, UTME score, and O’level result will be used to adjudged candidates that will be offered admission or not. After this, the departmental cut off mark will be released based on the aggregate score in JAMB, Post-UTME, and O’level. The school authority reviews this cutoff mark every year and it's determined based on students’ overall performance. Therefore, if you want to gain admission to read nursing, you must score s minimum of 250 and have at least 75% and above in the screening test for you to increase your chances of being admitted.
