Kerugoya Municipality School

The father and the founding director of Kerugoya Municipality Boarding Primary School, Mr. Cyrus Munene Mwenje (late) is undoubtedly, an academic icon per excellence. Mr. Mwenje passion for education started in his childhood where he would invite children in their home and literally teach them. When his father built him a small cubicle known in kikuyu dialect as ‘thingira ‘,Mr. Mwenje literary converted the small cubicle into a school where the village children would flock his small house for tutorial lesson. The village folk ended adding a title to his name-Mwalimu and it was not a surprise to anyone who knew him when he settled to do a teaching course as a trained secondary school teacher in Kagumo Teacher’s College and not forgetting that he had taught previously for several years as an untrained teacher. Mr. Mwenje passion and commitment for education saw him rise from a teacher to a deputy head teacher and head teacher of several schools which included Kiburu secondary school in Kirinyaga County, Kigumo Bendera Secondary in Muranga county, Karuiru Boys Secondary school and Mutira Girl’s secondary school both in Kirinyaga County among other schools. Where he has taught, records speak well of his great commitment to education in this country. In 1993, he started experiencing health problems and in 1985 he requested for an early retirement on health grounds .His last work station was Mutira Girls where he retired as a deputy head teacher. However his passion for education could not let him do anything else apart from what he loved most –teaching. In 1985, he started his own institution –RIAKIANIA SECRETARIAL AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE in Kirinyaga County, The institution admitted young men and women keen to pursue vocational training. The institution which was based in Riakiania Market later relocated to Kerugoya town to be known as KERUGOYA SECRETARIAL AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE and later in 1992 the secretarial and technical college transformed into a primary school, KERUGOYA MUNICIPALITY BOARDING PRIMARY SCHOOL and it opened its doors to the first batch of primary school children in 1992 thus qualifying to be one of the oldest private schools in Kirinyaga County. By the grace of God the school grew from a timber school to a magnificent ultra-modern school with story building resting on a leafy 9acre piece of land where thousands of children have had their dreams nurtured and their future chartered culminating into great men and women offering various services to our nation and world at large. We owe big thumps up to the founding directors Mr. and Mrs. Munene Mwenje for their sacrifice and commitment to the success of the school and that of the alumni, pupils, staff, friends and families associated with Kerugoya Municipality Boarding Primary School.
