History of western college

The school was founded in 1959 by Chief James Kayode Adewunmi from Ipoti Ekiti, in Ekiti State. He had the vision of of providing an environment where professional skills can be acquired and developed. In the early days, the focus was more on commercial subjects such as Accounting, Economics, Typing and Secretariat studies. In later years the school became more embracing giving students opportunities in other areas such as Arts, Sciences and vocational studies. The school is one of the oldest secondary schools in Lagos State with a tradition for excellence. It was then known as Western College of Commerce. It was originally located at 160 Griffith Street, before moving to 182 Herbert Macaulay Street, both at Yaba. It was moved to the present site because of the serene environment, which is very conducive for learning. The school has a good sporting background and a rich cultural heritage. It has produced many sporting legends who won laurels for Nigeria at the 2nd All African Games. In 1973, the squad of Modupe Beyioku, Omowunmi Joshua and Risikatu Alliu won 2 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals. The school represented Lagos State in the first All Nigeria Sports Festival and won 3 gold, and 4 silver medals in the table tennis competitions. The school also produced footballs stars in the '70's and '80's. Mudahiru Lawal of the famous IICC Shooting Stars club was a product of the school. The cultural troupe of the school was one of the best in the country, and the school was a pioneer in introducing cultural and dance troupes in the '60's. It produced the Atilogu dancers, the Itsekiri/Urhobo, the Hausa, and the Yoruba dance groups. They were encouraged by successive Governments to project our rich cultural heritage through the opportunities given to them to exhibit their talents and sterling performances to foreign dignitaries.
